Born in Dardilly, near Lyon, Jean-Baptiste-Marie vianney was the priest of Ars in the diocese of Bel-ley (1817), where he restored the practice of Christianity which had greatly declined during the revolution of 1789, founded the Work of Providence for poor children, practiced asceticism, and attracted many with his charisma as a priest and confessor. Canonized in 1925, he had, during his lifetime, the reputation of a saint. The Catholic Church celebrates his feast on August 4.
